The ability to influence others is a key leadership competency.

The ability to influence others is essential within the Incident Command System (ICS), where leaders must effectively direct emergency management operations, ensuring all team members are aligned with the mission’s goals. FEMA official training material states “The ability to influence others is a key leadership competency. At a minimum, we use our influencing skills to get needed resources and set people on a particular course of direction,”  which highlights the critical nature of influence in managing emergency responses across various phases such as prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.

From other personnel’s perspectives, leaders who can effectively influence others are seen as more capable and trustworthy.
